Gerson Main

Singer-songwriter Gerson Main (1986, Paramaribo) first began a vocational training in music at an MBO, and then studied at a conservatory of music, before deciding to enter the profession without the benefit of a diploma. This idiosyncratic songwriter and musician has since collaborated with such performers and vocalists as Akwasi, Dio, Steffen Morrison and Sarah Jane. His career received a huge boost thanks to his participation in 2015 on the Dutch television programme, 'The Best Singer-Songwriter from the Netherlands.' Main has since received innumerable offers for performances, interviews and commissions, despite the fact that fellow-finalist Anna Rune was the one who ultimately won the coveted the title. One example of Main’s popularity is his cover of Benny Neyman's song, Ik weet niet hoe which is used in a commercial for the Dutch telephone company, KPN.

‘We are all walking shop-windows, exhibiting the things the journey has brought to us so far,’ writes Main on his personal website, where he gives himself the tongue-in-cheek title of the 'worst singer-songwriter of the Netherlands.' This reflects the light-hearted yet thoughtful way he approaches his music. According to him, these poetical and dance-able songs all need to have a twist, an extra layer.  They are allowed to be a little bit shocking where necessary, otherwise for Main, it just doesn't make sense. The Dutch language is his most important instrument. With his double entendres and his playing around with the language, you could almost call him a spoken-word artist.

Autodidact Makers Coalition
Gerson Main is part of the new Coalition of Autodidact makers, which is made up of Theater Bellevue, Theater de Meervaart, Likeminds and  De PIT. Main would like to focus on creating a performance for music theatre. For this reason, he would like to use the coming year to immerse himself in writing for theatre – in the form of dialogues, spoken-word texts and/or brief fragments of theatrical prose. The Coalition hopes to facilitate this path by giving him the chance to work with dramatists, rappers, spoken-word specialists and dramatic authors.
